Spring Cleaning Tips from an Alabama Therapist

Spring is here! The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and spring cleaning is on the mind. Spring is a great time to clean your house and your life. It is the perfect time to reassess and reflect on your life and weed out habits dragging you down. Winter can be challenging, and we often feel exhausted afterward. However, with the new season upon us, it is time to purge what isn’t working for us and plant the things that do.

So, if you are in the mood to spring-clean your life, check out the following tips:

Set Your Goals/ Intentions

Create a priority list of short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals. What do you strive to accomplish in the next three months, this year, and five years? Do your current habits support these goals? If not, create a game plan to make some changes!

Organize Your Life

Spend a weekend going through your home. Decide what to keep, what to donate, and what to trash. Ask yourself, is the item genuinely adding value to your life or just taking up space? Usually, if we haven’t thought of or used something within the last 3-6 months, we no longer find value in that item.

Assess your Relationships

Take time to examine your relationships with friends, family, and significant other. Are you feeling connected and fulfilled by these relationships, or are you feeling drained and empty? If it’s the latter, assess whether the relationship is worth your energy or if some time and space away would benefit you.

Organize your Finances

Set aside an evening to thoroughly inventory your financials. We often feel more in control of other aspects of our lives when we feel in control of our finances. Are you spending money on things that matter to you? Assess not only what you’re spending but also what you’re spending on. By knowing what you value, you will know how you spend your money. You can then begin to dictate budgeting, spending more money for things with purpose and less money for things that don’t bring you joy.

Detox from Social Media

Try to limit your time on your devices, especially if your social media is bringing you down. Social media tends to be people’s best image of themselves. This constant bombardment can cause us to feel like we are not up to par with those around us and leave us feeling empty or not good enough. Conversely, social media also seems full of negative news, which tends to bring us down. By cutting back on your social media time, you can lean into things that bring you joy and focus on what you can and cannot control.

Self Care

When we don’t care for ourselves, we suffer, and those around us also suffer. As flight attendants say in their safety demonstration, you must put on your oxygen mask before helping others. So, make sure you get oxygen first! Enjoy the sun; read a book; have ice cream; turn off your email for a few hours. Lean into the things that bring you peace and joy.
